I am Hurley Hughes founder of The Cowboy Trade Day. If you are one of the few who has never attended The Cowboy Trade Day at Catoosa, Oklahoma, you can visit their website at The Cowboy Trade Day. Check it out!
I promoted and produced this big biannual event for 13 years. I have since stepped aside and turned "The Cowboy Trade Day" over to my niece Cindy Wilson and her husband Gary. They promoted/produced their first event without to much interference from me on September 20, 2008. They did a fine job and had a big turn out. The Cowboy Trade Day is in capable hands and will go on for many more years, getting bigger and better. I will no longer be involved with this event but... I have this new project that I am about to launch. It is going to be fun and I want you to be a part of it!
Since cutting loose from The Cowboy Trade Day, I have acquired an interest in collectible bits and spurs. I also make spurs. I made my first pair of spurs in 1967 while working on a ranch down in south Texas.
In 1975, I moved to Claremore, Oklahoma and had a little shop where I made spurs. I moved on though, and was away from the craft for several years. I'm back at it again! About four years ago, with a lot of help from my friend, bit and spur maker, (no relation!) Leon Hughes of Claremore, Oklahoma, I started making spurs again. He shared with me all that he knew about the craft and encouraged me. If by chance you are new to the craft, come to the Bit & Spur Swap and visit with other makers. Get some answers, Swap ideas.
